In this section, we will focus on the main barriers to youth participation in outdoor sports activities and the solutions followed by different countries’ sporting federations.

What are we talking about? Glossary of key terms

In this section, we will share some important terms and definitions for concepts and elements that will run through the toolkit. It is a quick onboarding phase to ensure we all speak the same language.


Common barriers to participation

In our desktop research, we identified if the sporting federations in our countries (Austria, Denmark, France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, UK) that fall within the 10 activities (adventure racing, canyoning, caving, cycling, dog sledding, hang gliding/ paragliding, hiking, mountaineering, orienteering, snow sports) detailed any barriers for youth participation on their website. Twelve federations have documented various barriers which are categorised and listed in our infographic below.


Beyond Horizons Desktop Research Findings from Partner countries

The aim of the desktop research has been to identify the barriers and issues in partners’ own countries/sectors for disadvantaged young people to participate in outdoor sports and any associated good practices and solutions.

Please have a look at the findings in the report that highlight several critical issues in the promotion and accessibility of youth programmes by federations and governing bodies.
